Most public cloud hosting cost comparisons fail to account for all the hidden costs of owning and maintaining your own hardware vs. paying for cloud hosting. This useful diagram from Acquia came across my Linkedin feed a few minutes ago. While aimed at Acquia’s own PaaS offering, this information applies to Azure, Amazon, Google and other public clouds.
Certainly not a complete list but it is thought provoking. What pricing comparisons don’t contain are the incredible opportunities for innovation available to a developer at a button press. Applications that scale up and down automatically based on load. Databases replicating across the world. Do you have users spread out across the globe? Deploy your code to servers on their doorstep. All of this, and the public cloud is almost certainly less expensive..by a wide margin.
I’m not affiliated in any way with Acquia, just a fan.
